Steel fabrication covers a wide range of work, from platforms, staircases and handrails to pipe supports, skids, tanks and structural frames. The more clearly you describe the job, the faster a fabricator can give you an accurate price, and the fewer surprises there are later.
Here is what to prepare before you request a quote.
1. Drawings or sketches
Detailed drawings with dimensions are best. If you do not have them yet, a sketch with key measurements and a few site photos is a good start. A fabricator can often help develop shop drawings from there, which may be quoted separately.
2. Material and grade
State the material you need, for example mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel (grade 304 or 316) or aluminium. If the structure is load-bearing, mention any steel grade or design standard your engineer has specified.
3. Loads and purpose
Tell the fabricator what the item will carry and how it will be used. A walkway for occasional inspection is designed very differently from a platform holding heavy equipment. For structural work, a design approved by a professional engineer may be required.
4. Surface finish and corrosion protection
Malaysia’s humid climate, and coastal and industrial sites in particular, are hard on steel. Specify the finish you need:
- Primer and paint system, including the number of coats
- Hot-dip galvanising
- Powder coating
- Stainless steel with no coating
If your client or plant has a painting specification, include it.
5. Quantity and timeline
Give the quantity and the date you need the items on site. Rush jobs are possible but may affect cost and material availability.
6. Site conditions and installation
Let the fabricator know whether you need supply only or supply and install. For installation, describe:
- Site location and access for lorries and cranes
- Working hours and any shutdown windows
- Hot work permit requirements
- Whether scaffolding or lifting equipment is needed
7. Inspection and documents
List any documents you need with the delivery, such as material certificates, welding procedure records, inspection reports or as-built drawings. Mentioning these early avoids delays at handover.

- Material type and grade
- Purpose and expected loads
- Finish and corrosion protection
- Quantity and required date
- Supply only, or supply and install
- Site access and safety requirements
- Documents needed at handover
